Omega 3 and why it's so important in pregnancy...

jessica morris

We have recently incorporated OG Omega 3 PLUS fish oil into the First Trimester Baboo Box as it's so important for pregnancy, read on to find out why....

Omega 3 fatty acids are essential to both adults and children as we cannot make them in our body and therefore need to include them in our diet through food such as oily fish, nuts and seeds or through supplemental form. Omega 3 fats are vital for brain function, vision, counteracting inflammation and hormonal balance.  Omega 3 fats are broken down into three components Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA), Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and Docosapentaenoic Acid (DPA).

The DHA component of Omega 3 fatty acids is integral for the building blocks of our brain, nervous and hormonal system, especially for women who are planning to conceive, pregnant and who choose to breastfeed. DHA is needed to support the formation of the developing foetus brain and nervous system hence the importance of getting optimal levels of omega 3 fats in the mother’s diet during this period. The greatest dependence on dietary DHA occurs in the final three months of pregnancy, it is during this time the foetus brain synapses are forming more rapidly (1). After delivery, the infant is reliant upon the amounts of DHA available in breast milk or milk formulas in order to optimize development of brain structure and function.  As a result consuming omega 3 fats whether through food or supplemental form is essential during this time in a woman’s life.
