There are endless checklists for the physical side of birth — what to pack, what to wear, what to eat. But preparing emotionally? That’s just as important, and far less talked about.
Birth is not just a medical event — it’s a deeply personal, life-changing experience.
Here’s how to prepare from the inside out:
1. Tune In to What You Want (and Need)
Ask yourself:
- What makes me feel safe and supported?
- How do I want to be spoken to during labour?
- What kind of energy do I want in the room?
These answers help shape your birth preferences and your emotional support plan.
2. Try a Grounding Practice
You don’t need to meditate for an hour a day. Even just 3 minutes of stillness helps.
Try this:
Place your hand on your belly. Breathe in slowly. As you exhale, repeat:
“I trust my body. I trust this process. I am not alone.”
Do it once a day. Before bed. In the bath. On a walk. Let your breath carry you.
3. Journal It Out
Use prompts like:
- What am I most excited about?
- What fears am I holding, and where do they come from?
- What do I want to remember most about this birth?
Writing creates space for clarity, courage, and connection.
Preparing emotionally is not about controlling the outcome — it’s about creating a sense of readiness, calm, and confidence no matter how the birth unfolds.
